Does your classroom environment support literacy independence?

Last month I attended a TCRWP Administrators' meeting led by Laurie Pessah, in which she shared a fantastic rubric teachers can use to self evaluate, reflect, and take action regarding the current state of their classroom environment through the lens of student literacy independence. The Rubric is divided into the following 12 sections:Elementary Bilingual Coach
- Classroom Organization
- Bulletin Boards (inside/outside)
- Classroom libraries
- Charts
- Independence
- Management/Tone of Classroom and School
- Schedule/Calendar/Routine Charts
- Room Set-up: Meeting Area
- Library
- Reading bags or Bins
- Balanced Literacy Components
- Writing Center
I'd like to invite you to print this rubric and take a moment of your time to go through each section carefully, making personal notes as you go along. Then, decide what changes you may want to implement in your classroom to support all of your students on their journey towards literacy independence.
Enjoy!
