Making Bookmarks From The Reading And Writing UOS Anchor Charts

I'd like to share with you something very neat that I observed in one of our 2nd grade bilingual teacher's room (Mr. Rodriguez from Rivera Elementary). He is using the strategies found in the RUOS Anchor Charts, and made them into bookmarks that his students use daily to practice these strategies as they read (each bookmark includes one complete Bend).

When students receive the bookmark template with the strategies, they cut and paste it on a piece of construction paper to make it sturdy. Then, as they learn each one of these strategies every day, they draw and color a picture below that strategy. Students keep these bookmarks in their reading folder to be used as they read.

Additionally, when students write their story’s summary in their reading journal, they start by describing which of the strategies they used when they read and how they helped them be successful.

Here are pictures of his students applying these learned strategies as they read using their bookmarks as a resource.

I think this is really awesome and I want to thank Mr. Rodriguez for letting me share this with you all. I hope you can take away something useful from his idea and please feel free to share in the comments below any ideas as to how you may tweak / improved / differentiate this resource/activity in your own classrooms.

UPDATE: Mr. Rodriguez will start simultaneously using writing bookmarks (from the WUOS anchor charts) along with the reading ones, as a "checklist" for his students to reference as they write their stories in their journals.
